Charlotte’s nonprofit professionals can see change unfolding in the communities in which they work. However, not all nonprofits feel confident they can measure these changes – or that they have the right systems in place to even try.
At the Impact, Data and Evaluation Academy, we recognize that nonprofits may have questions about how their organization can best use the data it captures. Or they may have questions about how to collect and use data to understand their operations and impact. IDEA is designed to provide low-cost, community-centered data and evaluation training that bridges this gap between inquiry and knowing, allowing nonprofits to act.
Evaluation Explorations is a three-day, interactive course that demystifies the evaluation process, guiding a cohort of nonprofit professionals through foundational steps towards a comprehensive evaluation. Through collaborative learning and practical application, this course offers a dynamic space for nonprofits to build in-house capacity for data and evaluation.

What to expect when you enroll
Day 1: Understand and design
On day one, we build a shared understanding of fundamental concepts in evaluation. We take a close look at the necessary resources and practices to support evaluation at your organization. Learners will have the opportunity to create a logic model and draft evaluation questions that matter to their organizations.
Day 2: Collect and manage
In this session, we discuss how to gather the information you need to answer your evaluation questions (and how to make sure this information isn’t stuck collecting dust in a file cabinet). We walk through the different sources of data and how to turn this data into meaningful indicators, allowing you to track progress and change. Learners practice designing surveys and focus group guides. Plus, we discuss practical tips for secure data storage.
Day 3: Interpret and act
Day three is all about turning data into decisions. We practice how to prepare your data for analyses. We discuss how to translate the data you collect into insights that answer your original evaluation questions. Learners explore how to use evaluation findings for both internal decision-making and external storytelling.

Is this course offered virtually or in-person?
The Fall 2026 Evaluation Explorations course will be held in-person at The Dubois Center at UNC Charlotte Center City on October 28-30.
How much does registration cost?
The cost to participate is $600 per registrant. Registration includes three full days of expert-facilitated learning, breakfast, lunch and free parking.
What if cost is a barrier for my organization?
If cost is a barrier to participation, please reach out to us directly at ideacademy@charlotte.edu. We have a limited number of scholarships available for small nonprofits and for organizations that wish to enroll multiple representatives in the course.
Can I register for select sessions without enrolling in the full course?
Enrollment in individual sessions is not available at this time. Evaluation Explorations is designed to foster cohort-based learning through content that builds cumulatively each day.
When does registration close for this course?
Registration for Evaluation Explorations closes at 11:59 p.m., Wednesday, October 21, 2026.
Do I need previous evaluation experience to participate?
No prior evaluation experience is needed! The vast majority of learners from past cohorts say they left the course able to put what they learned into practice right away.
