Holly Middleton, Ph.D.
Holly Middleton, Ph.D., serves as the associate director of Engaged Scholarship, where she develops methods to support the community-engaged research and teaching agendas of UNC Charlotte faculty. The CORE Series events and the annual faculty writing retreats are examples of her initiatives.
As a formerly tenured associate professor of English and writing program director, Dr. Middleton was driven by the following question: Whose literacy gets to count, and why? This experience informed an asset-based approach to teaching writing that enhanced student outcomes and inspired her research into the implicit standards that influence high-stakes writing assessment. As a founding co-editor of the open-access journal Literacy in Composition Studies, she co-developed editorial policies and ways of working to increase fairness, transparency, and accessibility. Another noteworthy achievement of Dr. Middleton is the system of support she established for faculty to meet narrative expectations for tenure and promotion at High Point University.
Dr. Middleton earned a doctorate degree in English from the University of Pittsburgh.
