Rowan County

Rowan County is a mixed suburban and rural county that borders Cabarrus County to the south and Iredell County to the west. It is centered around the county seat of Salisbury, but other towns include Kannapolis, China Grove and Landis. It was formed in 1753 from Anson County, making it one of North Carolina’s older counties.

Rowan County has been growing steadily; the U.S. Census Bureau estimates its 2025 population at about 155,100. The county offers a combination of urban and rural landscapes that make it attractive to those who want the benefits of Charlotte coupled with the charm of small-town character.

Residents and visitors can also enjoy various outdoor recreation opportunities in Rowan County. It is home to Dan Nicholas Park, Dunn’s Mountain Park and Eagle Point Nature Preserve which provide access to trails, camping, playgrounds and waterfront activities. The county also hosts various events like the Cheerwine Festival that bolster its tourism industry.

Historically, Rowan County’s economy was centered around textiles and agriculture, but this has since diversified following the decline of the textile industry. The county is strategically located between Charlotte and the Piedmont Triad of Greensboro, Winston-Salem and High Point which makes it a prime location for manufacturing and distribution.

Right now, Rowan County is trying to retain its historic identity while benefitting from the population growth it enjoys as part of the Charlotte Metropolitan Region. This growth, along with regional development, can put upward pressure on housing costs while local incomes do not necessarily rise at the same rate.

Rowan County also faces the challenge of ensuring that all of its residents benefit from its growth. This obstacle can be remedied through education and further workforce development. Intentional planning decisions can help facilitate growth and make sure rural communities aren’t simply absorbed into suburban development.
